Glenwood ArtStream Project Journal Index Schoolyard Observations

Schoolyard Observations

Students walked around the perimeter of the school yard observing elevation, direction, water runoff, and areas of bare ground. They made lists of the features and elements. See Schoolyard Mapping Exercises (PDF) for more information and the lesson plan.

Photos above: After-school students check their homemade rain gauges to measure the amount of rain falling on their schoolyard. ArtStream coordinator and art teacher Michelle Carlson demonstrates keeping notes of the data collected.
7th & 8th graders gather in the schoolyard to discuss their observations. Where's the highest point in the schoolyard?
Teacher Michelle Carlson asks, "Is this the lowest point? What happens on this slope?" Observing and taking notes on erosion.

The yard under the playground is covered with a bed of ground-up rubber tires to make a soft surface. However, the class observed that the tire chips were washing into the rest of the schoolyard after rains.
