The Ava Farmers Market

Selling farm surplus to townspeople is a tradition that began about as early as there were towns. These days, instead of horses and wagons, people sell market produce from their pickup trucks or vans.

Market gardeners are assisted by a Missouri Department of Agriculture program, AgriMissouri, which provides them with assistance in developing products and marketing aids such as banners and packaging materials. Most markets operate from April until November, or until a hard freeze puts gardens to bed for the winter.

Stroll around the Ava Farmer's Market on a summer Saturday morning:
Martha Goodrich, with customers  Gene and Mary Aster. Martha with her pickles and peach jam, all homemade.
Donald and Barbara Harper have beets, onions and peppers to sell, and more. Jerry Ham had red, pink and yellow tomatoes this week.
Rhieva McFarland and Wanella Platt just got free puppies at the market. Jim Thideman brought his wood carvings to sell as well as produce.
