2009- Stranger on the Tracks

It was late at night when the Memphis Night Express passed through Howell County on its way to Springfield, Missouri. Suddenly, the passenger train found itself surrounded in a timber fire covering over 100 acres. The train was heading for a railroad bridge at the bottom of the Brandsville hill. Little did the engineer know, but the bridge had also been damaged by the inferno.

Quite unexpectedly, the figure of a man appeared on the tracks waving a railroad lantern. The engineer took immediate action by applying the brakes, pouring sand on the rails, and turning the wheels in reverse. Just as the front of the engine reached the bridge, the train stopped. The passengers were pressed into service repairing the bridge. After the train was safely on the other side, everyone began searching for the stranger who had warned them. However, the mysterious individual had disappeared.

My third graders enjoyed taking part in a creative writing activity explaining who this hero of Brandsville might have been. This year's mural depicts our story of "Stranger on the Tracks."

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when suddenly at Brandsville a burst of flames broke out. The engineer and I saw a light going back and forth. It was a man waving a lantern and yelling, “Fire!” I tried as fast as I could to put sand on the tracks, reverse the wheels, and stop the train. Everyone thought they were going to die. I told the conductor to go wake the passengers. We all got off the train to put out the fire. We got the fire out and went back to the train. We made it across the bridge, and turned to thank the guy who saved us. But He was gone! I think he was a ghost! That was what happened that night on the Memphis Express.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when something terrible happened! A fire broke out in the woods near Brandsville, and the railroad bridge was burning. I began swinging and lantern and yelling, “Fire!” I am a ghost! When the engineer saw me swinging my lantern, he tried to stop the train. After the train finally stopped, the people all got off the train to fix the burned-out bridge. When the passengers finished, they turned to thank me, but I was gone! That is what happened at Brandsville.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when suddenly fire burst out at Brandsville. The crew and passengers were not aware of the danger until a stranger named Emily cried over the loud noise of the train, “There is a fire over here!” The stranger was also waving a lantern back and forth. The crew woke all the passengers to help put out the fire on a railroad bridge. We put the wheels in reverse, dumped sand on the tracks, and slammed on the brakes. When the train stopped, we all put out the fire. After the fire was out, everyone turned to thank the stranger, but she was gone! We thought the stranger was a local farmer. She is a hero to us all. That’s what happened during the great Brandsville fire.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when suddenly a fire broke out at Brandsville. I live on a farm near the train tracks. I got out of bed, got dressed, got my lantern, and went to the burning railroad bridge so I could warn the approaching train. After the train finally stopped, I went back home to bed. A few hours later, the train’s passengers woke me up because they were looking for me. But by the time I opened the door, the train had already passed by my house. That is the story of how I saved a train one night.

One Monday night in 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . Suddenly at midnight , I could see an old man standing on the railroad bridge shouting, “Stop!” I am the engineer of the train. I could see bright lights so I stopped the train by putting sand on the tracks. The old man walked up to me and said, “Fire! Fire!” All the passengers woke up and got off the train. We all ran with buckets to a nearby pond to get water to put out the fire. We repaired the bridge. When we turned to thank the old man, he was not there! For my opinion, I think he was a hobo. That’s the story of the great Brandsville fire.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when suddenly a big fire burst out at Brandsville. I was a passenger on the train. My name is Bobby Cortez. The engineer saw a stranger on the tracks. We slammed on the air brakes, dumped sand on the tracks, and reversed the power on the engine. The train stopped at a burning bridge just in time. The Engineer woke all the passengers, and we got off the train to put the fire out. Then the train crossed the bridge. When we turned around to thank the stranger, he was gone. So we got back on the train. I think the stranger was an angel. That’s what happened one Monday night in 1893.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when I suddenly spotted a burst of flames near Brandsville. I was a passenger on the train when I saw the fire. The engineer heard a man standing on the tracks shouting, “Fire! Fire!” Bob, the engineer, quickly slammed on the brakes, put sand on the tracks, and reversed the wheels so the train would go backwards. Finally, the train stopped. We all got off the train to put out the fire on a burning railroad bridge. When the train crossed the bridge, everyone started singing, “We are the champions!” After that we turned to thank the stranger on the tracks, but he wasn’t there! I started thinking, “Was he an angel, a farmer, or a ghost?” So I said, “It was an angel sent down from God to help us.”

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . My name is Jake, the engineer. While my train was going around a corner at Brandsville, I spotted a tall man standing in the center of the tracks shouting, “Fire!” I pulled the clutch and slammed on the brakes so the passengers on my train would not crash into the burning flames. We unloaded all the passengers to help look for the stranger, but he was no where in sight. I think he was a wise traveler. That’s what happened during the Brandsville fire.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when suddenly a fire started at Brandsville. The train was coming to a bridge when they saw a man standing on the tracks yelling, “Fire! Fire! Fire!” I am the engineer of the train. We threw sand on the tracks, put the emergency brakes on, and turned the wheels in reverse. The train finally stopped at the edge of the bridge. I woke all the passengers to help get water to fight the fire. Before the passengers got back on, we first took the train across the bridge. We turned to thank the stranger for saving our lives, but he was already gone. That really scared me, but I think he was an angel that Jesus sent down to take care of us. So we headed on to Springfield .

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when suddenly a fire was on the tracks at Brandsville. One hundred acres of woods were on fire all around us. I was one of the passengers, and I could see a lantern swinging up ahead. Suddenly, we felt the train trying to stop so we could all jump off. All the passengers got buckets and went to a nearby stream for water to fight the fire. We were able to put the fire out on the railroad bridge. We looked for the stranger who was waving the lantern to save our lives, but no one was there. I decided that God had sent an angel down to protect us.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late Monday night when I was driving half asleep toward the Brandsville railroad bridge. I suddenly heard someone yelling, “Fire!” There was a lantern swinging on the tracks ahead. I wondered if I was dreaming. I put the wheels in reverse and poured sand on the tracks. There was a fire! We rolled on for two train links before we could finally stop. All the passengers were able to put out the fire with the river water under the bridge. Everyone pitched in to help. But when we turned to thank the man who saved us, he was gone! I think he was a ghost! We had a moment of silent prayer for him before we left. That’s what happened at Brandsville.

In 1893 the Memphis Night Express was headed for Springfield . It was late on Monday night when a fire suddenly broke out around Brandsville. The flames covered 100 acres of land. A burst of light started waving near the tracks, and we knew someone was trying to warn us about the fire ahead. We were going 45 miles an hour, so it was hard to stop the train before we got to the railroad bridge. The crew all thought they were going to die, but the sleeping passengers didn’t know what was happening. When we stopped, two train cars were hanging over the cliff. The passengers woke up to help the crew repair the bridge. When the job was finished, we went to thank the stranger who saved our lives. But he was not there! No one ever found out what had happened to him. That is the story of the Memphis Night Express.

In 1893 the railroad bridge was on fire near Brandsville. The engineer saw a man waving a lantern. The stranger was yelling, “Fire! Fire!” The engineer heard the warning over the noise of the train. A wildfire was out of control. The engineer dumped sand on the tracks and put the wheels in reverse. The passengers got off the train to put the fire out and rebuild the bridge. The train arrived in Springfield at 2:00 on Tuesday morning instead of 10:55 on Monday night. I think the stranger on the tracks was an angel. That’s what happened to everyone on the fast train.
